Penguins

Little Penguins and Rakali

At the end of the St. Kilda Pier there is a man made breakwater. It’s a long finger of rocks piled up about 30ft above the water level to provide shelter for docked boats. It has now become home to the only breeding colony of penguins in the Port Phillips bay. The colony is as of May 1300 strong a relatively small colony as far as penguins go. They are Little Penguins also called little blue penguins or fairy penguins. They are the smallest penguin in the world (and really cute!!!) about 12-14inches when full grown. They live along the coast of Australia year round because they are too small and don’t have enough body fat to survive the temperatures closer to the Antarctic.

A group called St. Kilda Earthcare has been researching this colony for over 20 years. But the general public only found out about this colony about four years ago when some backpackers accidentally found them. And apparently when backpackers know something so does the rest of the world.

There is another breeding colony a little ways up the coast on Phillip Island and that one has about 66,000 penguins in its colony. These little blues are much slimmer than the St. Kilda birds due to food availability and proximity to the breeding sites. The Phillip Island birds have roughly a 70 to 80 kilometer trip everyday to their nearest sea grass bed which is where the anchovies like to live and anchovies make up the majority of this penguins diet. While the St. Kilda birds only have about a 10km swim every day. They are located right next to the mouth of the Yarra river which runs through Melbourne and a beautiful bed of sea grass grows in that brackish water. Leaving the St. Kilda birds with a much easier life.

Watching them come in for the night it looks like they are flying through the water. You see a little haed and then as they get within a few meters of the shore the rest of the body pops up and it looks like they are surfing across the water on their bellies! So graceful in the water I was really amazed to see how good they are at climbing rocks. Apparently the bottoms of their little feet are like sandpaper so even thought they don’t have toes they can still grip the rock. You will see them at times when coming down a hill flop on to their butts and slide down the incline.

I am posting up some photos that I took and I am sure you will notice that most of these photos are very strange. White light has been proven to cause them major stress so you can’t use a flash when taking pictures so these were taken in the dark with the help of a rather weak red light being shined on the penguin its self (they can’t see red very well). And then Picasa did the rest some of them turned into very interesting light patterns no idea what the picture is of but they still look really cool. The 2 half way decent ones were taken of an adult that was already on shore before the sun went down. There are apparently two reasons that these birds will not go out for a day one being they have eggs or chicks that are too small to leave or the fishing was so good that the bird stayed out for a few days straight taking little cat naps on its back and so now needs a day of rest.

Once they get onto the land they feed head to their burrow and feed their waiting chick. Which basically looks like the chick is trying to mug its parents. They stick their little beaks into mom or dads and the parent regurgitates part of the days catch. And these little guys don’t leave it at that they are hungry and they want it all!!! They will chase their parents around getting as much food from them as they will give until mom or dad hope up on some rocks too big for the chick to climb in order to escape.

After feeding the parents will sit up on the rocks for a while preening themselves or their mate and have a chat with each other or their neighbors. They are very social birds. They keep their mate for 2 to 3 years then for some reason switch partners.
I made friends with one of the ladies that was out that night working on educating the public and making sure that the penguins were being protected. She also works on the research team that works with these penguins and she has arranged it for me to come out with them tonight. I am really excited!!!!

It was really cool talking to her (her name is Kim), and realizing that Kim doesn’t really know any other birds than these penguins. She isn’t in the wildlife field she works in finance and lives in the area and decided to get involved with protecting and researching the penguins. Its really nice to see a community so interested and conserned about other creatures living around them.

All of the burrows are on the sheltered side of the rock and most of the penguins would swim aroung the point so they could swim up almost to their burrows. But there were a few who decided to climb up the other side and cross the path to climb down to their burrows. If only the world revolved around me and my whims the way the croweds revolved around these penguins. Everyone would split giving the bird a wide path to use in order to cross over the human walking path. And if it decided to take a little stroll up or down the path everyone was tripping over each other to get of the way (All of this slightly organized chaos was happening in multiple languages it was really amazing to watch and funny as hell).

I also saw my first Australian mammal it is called the Rakali. Australia’s native water rat, they are a distant relative to the common rat but much cooler!!! They swim along the break waters hunting for mollusks and crabs. They eat on a plate form normally a flat rock on the bank so in the mornings you will find little piles of shells along the shore. They are now protected here because they were nearly hunted to extinction for their soft, thick, water repelling fur. I really enjoyed watching them swimming around. But I really enjoyed watching the crowds of people that were there watch these little guys. You could see their faces go from eeww gross when they were told that they are a rat to wow they are really cool and kind of cute.

Nationality

My nationality seems to be really confusing to people. The other night we stopped at a burger place to get some chips (fries) when I noticed that they put a fried egg on their burgers which of course I commented on this. I mean really a fried egg on top of a burger. The girl behind the counter kind of looks at me then my companions and asks if I was English or something. And Tickle (yes his name is Tickle) who is English and knew I was American because we had been talking about it earlier answers back “No American” with this demeanor that seemed to say “which explains any odd things she might do or say”. After he answered the Irish guy we were with looks really surprised apparently the whole time he thought I was Canadian.
So it seems I have done a fantastic job these last 10 years or so removing last every trace of my southern accent. The Brits and Irish think I’m Canadian and the everyone ells thinks I’m a Brit. It’s really funny how shocked they all are when I tell them that I am from the Southeast United States. I feel like Granddaddy Howard would be very proud of this accomplishment.

I believe that I have stated how expensive it is over here but if I haven’t quite said it enough Holly Hell Batman it is flipping expensive! I have found one weird exception to this so far. I love sushi if I could eat it every day I would but it is rather expensive at home but not here. If you want to eat out on a budget you eat sushi. There are fantastic little sushi shops on every corner with rolls averaging about 2.50-2.80 a piece (probably run about 6-8 bucks at home) and if you look hard enough or time it right you can find a shop or two that have their rolls on special last night I got 3 roles for A$5.50 it was ridiculous

Working on my emails to potential employers and while researching one superb fairy wrens I ran acrossed this web site that just has amazing bird photographs. I have never heard of most of these birds but they are just stunning and I though I would share!

I got a job!!!

Yay!!!!
I got a job! Working at an IGA Grocery store. I start next week. It's obviously not what I am here for but it will pay the bills. And unlike the IGA's back home it is really nice, clean store. Not sure how much I get paid but from talking with the guy whin interviewed and hired me apparently if you work on Saturday you get paid extra and if you work on Sunday you get paid even better. But the most coveted days to work are national holidays and apparently Australia day is coming up and if I prove myself to be a good worker I might just be lucky enough to get scheduled to work on Australia day. Its kind of funny to me that its a reward to work on a holiday. I would be happy to work open to close Saturday, Sunday and any holiday.

At the moment the plan (subject to change at the drop of a hat) is to stay in the Melbourne area for 3 to 4 months putting away money to make sure that if I get the opportunity to volunteer on a project I have the money set aside to do it.

A friend of mine just sent me a few more contacts for potential field tech jobs over here so today or tomorrow I will be emailing them and hopefully setting up a tech position soon.

But in the mean time I am really enjoying being here. This area is a multicultural hot spot the food is amazing the people are great to watch. Hopefully with starting this job I will start making friends. And I am working on finding a place to stay that is not a Hostel. The hostel has been a good experience but it is to expensive for what it is plus people are not very neat (yeah I know that coming from me hahaha!!). No I mean the kitchen is just eewwww most of the time and it gets cleaned like 3 times a day but its still just gross and makes wanting to cook very hard plus it would be nice to go to sleep with out really loud drunk people out side my window.

Well I'm off to write up some Hi my name is Aliza and I am fantastic and this is why you should bring me on as apart of your research project emails.
Lots of love
I went to the aquarium yesterday; it was pretty cool not a huge place but had some really neat stuff in it. Some of the deep water reef fish are crazy! And I loved the descriptions next to each exhibit. Where ells are you going to see a Green Sea Turtle described as “Cheeky little fellows”. They were great so Australian.
They had Penguins on exhibit so freaking cute! I can’t wait to get a chance to go to Philips Island and see some in the wild. I watched a presentation that they do on sharks. It ended up being more of an explanation on why you don’t really need to fear most sharks. And how they have more to fear from us than we do from them. Did you know you are more likely to die from a Coconut falling on your head than a shark attack! On average average about 10 people die from sharks a year while some 100 to 150 million are killed by people every year. I have seen those figures in a number of different papers and it is looking like its closer to the 150million side of the range.
Over all it was a really nice aquarium though I learned my lesson about not stopping to check the day of the week before going. I totally forgot it was Saturday (Big mistake) screaming children everywhere! I’m not sure if the kids where more irritating than their parents. The parents would position themselves in such a way that you couldn’t get by without being really rude and proceeded to stand there and do nothing and once they did start moving it was at a pace that might have given a snail a run for its money, while still managing to take up a ridiculous about of space. It was really quite impressive thinking about it now but yesterday it was just very annoying.

So I am trying to get back into the habit of running regularly. So last night I went for my first run since getting here. I am very aware that I am starting back from square one and that it will take me a while to build back up to being able to cover long distances so I decided to wait till evening to go run. Because one its cooler and two I am really self conches and wanted fewer people around. Any who my run turned into a bit of a comedic disaster! It started sprinkling almost straight away which was fine but then it turned into a hard continuous sprinkle and I was soon totally wet. I decided to try and take a short cut from the harbor back to the house. Trying being the correct term here! Anyway 30mins later in the dark, wet, and cold I found two ladies waiting on a tram and asked them directions to Auckland St. Apparently somewhere in the residential maze I was running through I hung a right where I should have taken a left and went in the total opposite direction than I meant to go in. so my quick little jog turned into an hour and 20min ordeal and at the end of it I was frozen and soaked through, needless to say I was very very happy when I could hear the loud roar of half drunken voices coming from the court yard of my hostel!

Update

Hey all....

Just wanted to say hi and give a little update. I was inspired by reading aliza's latest blogs. Although mine will be far less interesting I shal continue anyways.... So I've been in DC pretty much all summer and through the fall. I love the young professional vibe here. I love the fashion conciousness of the young people that seem to be inventive yet not over done. And I absolutely love the thought of being in the same city as our dear president and Michelle...

I'm slightly perturbed about the job situation overseas.. As a result of the collapse of the Greek economy last yr in late spring early summer the market overseas for athletes has deminished and it has been hard to find a good job this year. I find myself in a strange transitional hard spot in my life, floundering about trying to to decide my next step and working for a friend a few hrs a wk to pay bills... My decision is should I continue to wait ( I had a thought the other day although slightly depressing and negative but pretty accurate I feel like a stagnat puddle debating life with myself) anyways so the decision is to wait and see what happens with overseas give it another yr or 2 .... Or to start coaching going in to next fall??? Decisions decisions.... I'm not sure I like being an adult lol ...

So that's all for now...

All of the people that I live with and interact with at the hostel have been really nice but I am starting to realize how different I am and my interests are to most of the other people that I am living with. It seems life for most of them getting “Pissed” (American English translation Drunk, trashed, wasted, ect…) every night is the primary goal. And since alcohol over here is so expensive most of what is consumed is this horrible sweet wine called Goon. Absolutely terrible stuff, tastes gross, gives you a horrible hangover and it is consumed by the gallons on a nightly basis. I drank it once and think I am pretty much good. Though I was told the other day that I had to keep working at it and eventually I would develop a tolerance to the hangovers (I think this is one area I feel ok being a quitter).

I did go out with some people the other night to a bar in a hostel that was mainly backpackers. It was a very interesting experience. I really enjoyed people watching in there, though I think it kind of confused my party that I was perfectly happy to watch the craziness rather than actively participate. I have no problem dancing and singing and having a good time but there were some very interesting people in there that I was fascinated by. There were a few very intense looking guys who had turned some metal bar stools into drums. They were having a far better time with those stools than I think anyone has ever had with a stool. It was funny as hell to watch! Some of the dancing that was going on was crazy, entertaining as hell to watch but totally nutz! I also discovered that over here my gaydar is crap. I cracked one of the girls I was with up when I asked her “are there a really large number of gay guys here or are they just European?” Apparently they are for the most part just European. Who knew!!!!

Walking around I have noticed that at least in this area Homosexuality seems to be pretty open though according to Bill Bryson it was only recently legalized I think he said sometime in the 1980’s I have been reading about Australia and its history in Bryson’s book “In a Sunburned Country”. (It’s really good I am enjoying it a lot). I didn’t realize just how short the European portion of Australia’s history has been and how terrible to the plants, animals, and particularly the Aboriginal people the Europeans have been. It’s just amazing how recent a lot of these political changes have been. I still think it’s crazy that it took us until 1865 to get rid of slavery but it wasn’t ill sometime I believe in the 1920’s that the government recognized them as people and apparently as recent as the 1960’s the Aboriginal people were still being referred to as “feral jungle creatures” in some school text books. It’s just unbelievable to me though maybe that is a product of my up brining where a person is a person black, white, gay, strait, blood, or stranger you treat them all with compassion and respect until they prove they don’t deserve it. Though policies definitely seem to be changing around here drastically and quickly now.

Update from down under

So I got my phone the other day. Since I know no one I haven’t really used it. But I find the most amazing feature on it and I think all phones should have it. It’s called a fake call when someone is talking to you and you want to get out of the conversation you hold down a key for like 3 seconds close your phone and about 5 to 10 seconds later you get a call. No one is there it’s just your phone ringing but you can use the call as an excuse to leave a conversation. How freaking fantastic is that and who the hell has ever heard of that feature on a phone! I am in love with the idea and am now looking for a reason to use it!
I went into the city the other day it was fantastic! I think I’m really going to like this place. I mean its green in every direction with amazing birds everywhere you go. Not to mention Chinese, Japanese, and Taiwanese food on every corner right next to the coffee shops!!!

I was talking to Hannah the other day about finding that place that feels like home to use as my refuge when I feel homesick. I think she said hers was Dominos or Pizza Hut. Well I think I found mine Target!!! It was so strange walking in there the store was a little different and the layout was really odd it’s a 3 story store. But it still felt so familiar walking around in there. It is really amazing how a little familiarity with a place changes your whole outlook. I also wear a watch with the time back home set on it. Partly because I haven’t figured out how to change it but mostly because knowing what the time is at home is comforting in a strange way makes me feel a little more connected. Maybe because I can then see what someone might be doing right now back home almost like I was there with them not on the other side of the world.

I got some really good pictures of Sulfur-crested Cockatoos today in the park. I really enjoy watching them. Though it makes me a little sad at the same time thinking about Baby and why she was the way she was.

They are not meant to be caged and alone all the time. They are a very social creature, the group I was watching were constantly communicating with each other and when they would fly off they would still talk with very loud calls. They are very active birds flying and jumping every few minutes and constantly foraging and chewing on the trees. The first time I saw them they were foraging on the grass plucking blades of grass chewing on them for a few seconds and then moving on to a new blade. It makes a lot of since to me now that Baby was so loud and needed and bitchy because that is exactly how they are in the wild, she was just being a Cockatoo.
